Explore silicon bronze casting, its unique properties, and why it's the go-to choice for durable, beautiful sculptures and architectural elements.

Understanding Silicon Bronze Casting

Silicon bronze casting is a specialised metalworking process that utilises an alloy primarily composed of copper with silicon as the main alloying element. At Maybrey Precision Castings in Kent, we employ this technique to create stunning, long-lasting sculptures and architectural features, including the recent "Black Renaissance" sculptures for the Freedom Monument Sculpture Park

Properties That Define Silicon Bronze

Silicon bronze boasts several key characteristics that make it ideal for casting. Its exceptional resistance, particularly against atmospheric and saltwater corrosion, ensures that outdoor sculptures and architectural elements maintain their integrity for decades. Silicon bronze also excels in weldability, which is crucial when creating large or complex pieces that require the joining of multiple cast components. Perhaps one of the most striking features of silicon bronze is its attractive golden colour. This warm hue develops a rich patina over time, adding depth and character to sculptures as they age.

The Silicon Bronze Casting Process

Creating a silicon bronze sculpture involves several crucial steps:

Mould Preparation: We craft detailed moulds, using conventional and CNC patterns as well as, advanced 3D-printed sand mould technology for complex designs.
Melting: The silicon bronze alloy is heated to its melting point in our state-of-the-induction furnaces.
Pouring: Our skilled technicians carefully pour the molten metal into the prepared mould.
Cooling and Solidification: The metal cools and takes on the shape of the mould.
Finishing: We remove the casting from the mould and apply the necessary post-casting treatments.

At Maybrey Precision Castings our foundry located in South East England we are able to apply the following post casting treatments: Shot blasting, anodising, galvanising, and powder-coating, patina and lots more.

Applications of Silicon Bronze Casting

Silicon bronze casting is used in a wide array of applications. In art, it's a favourite for sculptures and artistic works, prized for its durability and aesthetic appeal. Architects and designers often choose silicon bronze for architectural elements and decorative features, knowing it will maintain its beauty for years.

The marine industry relies on silicon bronze for hardware and fittings due to its excellent resistance to saltwater corrosion. Musical instrument maker’s value silicon bronze for its acoustic properties and resistance to corrosion from human contact.

Why Choose Silicon Bronze Casting?

The versatility of silicon bronze cannot be overstated. It's equally suitable for creating small, intricate pieces with fine details as it is for large-scale monumental sculptures. This adaptability allows artists and designers to push the boundaries of their creativity, knowing that the material can support their vision.
